Few events in life are more devastating than having a family member or close friend who is incarcerated. Texas Inmate Families Association (TIFA) members have united to support families affected by having a loved one in the Texas criminal justice system and to improve the conditions and life chances of Texas inmates.
Where the Family Fits In
About 200,000 adult men and women are incarcerated at any one time in county jails and state correctional facilities in Texas.
When someone is incarcerated most families experience financial losses as a result of the
incarceration. However, the loss is greatest for those families who try to maintain the offender as a
family member. In recent years there has been improvement in the efforts of the Texas
Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Legislature to help families stay connected but it has
come at a cost. TIFA would like to know what that financial burden is for families and if there is a
way to lower that financial burden.
If you are in the Carrollton area, you are going to want to be sure to attend the first TIFA meeting of the Carrollton Chapter at the Church of the Nazarene at 1529 E. Hebron Parkway (a map is available on this website) on Tues., Feb 8.
All units can now receive the CARE packages. Total expenditures cannot exceed $50 per quarter and it can be spread out over the time period. This does not affect the normal commissary spending. This is a good way for others to give to those incarcerated rather than sending money to the trust fund. One can even send monies to the trust fund through this site. http://www.texas.gov/ecommdirect.
